As I was creating our school's summer reading list I was completely taken by this nonfiction text that teaches many of us about a place we may not have known about: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I am equal parts fascinated and horrified that such a place exists. This book is geared towards students in grades 4-8. From my experience with fourth graders who feel strongly about injustice, this would be a powerful book to use as part of a unit on human-environment interactions.
You may want to pair the book with this "mockumentary" about the plastic bag.
